Motorcycle “Open Road”(in 30 Species)I spotted an intarsia pattern in a magazine that struck my fancy. I had a lot of small scraps around the shop so I decided to make one and see how many varieties I could incorporate in it. The bike sits on my window sill a work and I find it enjoyable to see the sun on it in the afternoon. WOOD: 30 species, 2 coats spray urethane
Pin CushionThis a wall plaque. The yellow sponge the cat is holding forms a pin cushion. My wife sews a lot so this keeps some pins and needles close at hand. WOOD: maple, walnut deft oil
Whale MirrorThis a wall plaque/mirror. Copied out of a Scroll Saw magazine, it shows an indian representation of a whale above a modern intarsia whale. The top one is made from different colors of cedar and uses traditional rounding of the edges of each piece. The bottom one, made from maple and walnut, is more difficult as most of the pieces are combined into one block that is then shaped. There can be no gaps or it shows.
Habitat for HumanityIn past years Habitat for Humanity held a draw for some very fancy play houses. Each one had a cute name. I made some plaques to with them.
Fish Wall PlaqueThis a wall plaque. As intarsia designs go this one is actually very difficult. Because many of the pieces are shaped as a whole, the fit between them must be perfect. There is a little bit if carving on the tail and to hollow out the mouth. A large fisher man’s fly add a sense of adventure. WOOD: maple, walnut, mahogany, cherry, gum wood , black wood.lacquer
Monkey PlaqueThis is simple quick project from a magazine. It is cut from one piece of Aspen, so if the lines aren't followed exactly it doesn't matter. The finished pieces were carved with several sizes of gouges then stained and glued together with hot melt. A simple frame was made from Alder.WOODAspen, Alderwalnut, mahogany, oak stainsspray Lacquer
Christmas OrnamentsEvery Christmas I try to make a little something for the tree or the house decorations. From the left: Skinny snow man from bass wood, carved and painted; Santa in the chimney from bass wood, mahogany, and blood wood, intarsia and carving; Happy dog intarsia from mahogany, alder, walnut, blood wood, black wood; Angel of Peace wall plaque from alder, aspen, walnut, mahogany, black wood, tunga nut (vegetable ivory), birch plywood; Nativity scene from various wood, intarsia and carved.
Sneaky RaccoonThis a wall plaque. It is my favourite piece. It combines intarsia with marquetry. The sneaky raccoon has stolen the acorn from the picture. I think he has a guilty look about him. WOOD: maple, walnut, red cedar, ambrosia, oak, black wood.lacquer
